COWHC Ladies 2s vs Surbiton Ladies 9s - 10th Mar 2018

So Saturday morning started with a cooked breakfast. And then to make sure I had everything ready for the game in Surbiton at some ridiculous time of the day!

After dropping Martin at Croydon High School for his game I left to pick Vicky and Poppy up from East Ewell train station. Only to get a phone call from Martin telling me that Vicky and Poppy were at Croydon High, could I turn back and pick them up. There was no way we would get to East Ewell for the time we had agreed.

We arrived at Surbiton and saw the team we were about to play. They all looked like they were about 12 with the exception of a couple, they had to have a couple of older ladies to drive them to their game didn't they! By the time the game finished it would almost be their bedtime. We were promised some lovely teas after the game, we were not disappointed, a very nice pasta bake and a salad.

Anyway to the game.

We were all very positive, we can do this! The first half we were awesome, some brilliant hockey. The youngsters that were Surbiton, kept me, Shazza, new name apparently! Very busy. I saved a few and let a couple in. Vicky managed to hoof a ball which earned us a 16, not sure how the Surbiton umpire got that decision so wrong. We were awarded a couple of short corners which Leggs managed to score one of her brilliant goals from one of them. Welcome back from your trip Leggs! That took us up to half time, 2-1 to them. We had given everything in the first half. Even I had broken out in a sweat!

The second half wasn't quite so smooth and clinical, they seemed to be rejuvenated where as we were pretty tired, it didn't stop us giving everything else we had left. We were eventually rewarded with a couple more short corners, one of which Nicky beautifully left the ball to leave the D by about 501cm for Jo I think to hit into the D to Rachel who volleyed it into the top of the goal. It looked as if it had hit the side netting, but no it was definitely in, 2 goals against a very good side. Unfortunately they had already scored 4. The final score was 6-2 which really doesn't reflect the game. Fatigue got the better of us and a couple of mistakes let two of their goals trickle in. One was a bit doubtful as we didn't think the ball was touched in the D by an attacker. But never mind. Everyone played really well.
