COWHC were to take on Cheam at Monks Hill on this eventful Saturday afternoon. Having braved the cold weather at Wimbledon last week, the ladies were ready and raring to overcome the 70 minute challenge that lay ahead.
The team turned up in numbers (meaning TWO subs...not one, were waiting on the sideline)!
The game was heated from the first whistle as Cheam showed themselves to be a thorn in Cows side. They swung at the ball every opportunity they got and were rewarded with a goal to put the home side on the chase just after the half.
The sleek passing from last week’s game were put on hold as COWHC ladies struggled to put their best foot forward. First touches were off, 50/50’s went the opposition’s way and boy did referee decisions leave the team bewildered.
We managed to put a goal past their defence after being awarded a penalty corner in the 2nd half as Naila netted (or back boarded) her 2nd for the club.
The joy and celebrations were short lived however, as two minutes before the final whistle, a ball was hit into our defensive D and deflected off a COWHC stick into the net. Needless to say, despite the outcry from our ladies and the obvious lack of celebration from Cheam, the (clearly dubious) goal was allowed to stand.
The game ended at 1:2 to Cheam despite our efforts on the day.
We have taken this as a learning opportunity and will come to next week’s fixture aiming to up the ante and return to our own free flowing, quick passing game.
So stay tuned for Lena’s swap to a striking position and more of Rachel’s pre-match warm up routines.
The POM was awarded to Lisa P for her prowess in goal at thwarting 99% of the (legitimate) shots from Cheam.
