All teams know that communication is key to success, and we knew it was going to be vital in our top of the table clash against the Alpha team in the Surrey Open Premier League, Old Cranleighans 3s. Both teams were unbeaten, not just in November, but for the whole season so far.
Unfortunately, Margy went incommunicado after a late night on the Whiskey. He also claimed he had 'car trouble' and couldn't even get his hands on an old Sierra to get him to the game. We still had a strong squad and everyone met in the changing room, although Mike parked at the Hotel. As ever, we all looked smart in our team Uniform.
The start of the game was very even, but OCs started quickly and a crash hit in the D bounced up off a CROWS stick in the air to the league's top scorer who buried the chance past Terry.
We responded well, culminating in some great play from Will who turned like a Lima (?) and rifled a shot to draw us level. The Echo of the ball on the back board rang around the Golf course. It stayed 1-1 until half time.
A good team like OCs have the knack of scoring at the right times and so it proved. A shot was cleared by our POM, Terry, into Steve's gut. No X-Ray was needed, but it bounced off him into the striker's path, "play on" was called, and the ball was despatched. We were 2-1 down, and then OCs got the goal that clinched the game and made it 3-1. However, we finished strongly and had a great last 15 minutes. There aren't many Beta (sic) sides around than OCs so we can be proud of our performance. Bravo, boys!
For my part, telling a team mate to Foxtrot Oscar wasn't a good example of positive comms, hence me winning the DOD award and being your scribe. In my defence, the oppo did have Romeo & Juliet unmarked on our goal line, but what a Charlie!!
Thanks to Hutch & Cocksy for running the side line, and to the supporters, including my own Papa, Victor.
NB apologies to Delta, India, Kilo, Quebec, Tango, Yankee and Zulu, but as we know competition for places is tough in this club right now!
Thanks to Nicky for umpiring
