Croydon & Old Whitgiftian HC Mens 2nd XI secure promotion

On Saturday Croydon & Old Whitgiftian Men's 2nd xi joined their 1st and 3rd elevens by securing promotion with an 8-0 win over Chertsey Thames Valley. Making it three teams promoted for Croydon & Old Whitgiftian hockey club this year.

Following a nervy error-filled first 20 minutes the Croydon & Old Whitgiftian side settled into the game and swiftly moved into a 3-0 lead through two goals from Trevor Clarke and one for Jay Patel. With scoreline 3-0 at half time it was important who scored first in second half and Alex Steele secured that goal for the Croydon side with just a couple minutes played. From 4-0 down Chertsey Thames Valley had a mountain to climb, with their potent strike force nullified by the excellent Croydon defence they dropped their heads and a further three goals from Trevor Clarke and one from Jay Patel sealed the 8-0 win and the 10th cleansheet for goalkeeper Terry Eeles.

However the win alone was not enough to secure promotion, the result of Old Cranleighans vs Sunbury & Walton could decide whether the Croydon team needed a point from their final game against Teddington Oaks. Fortunately for the Croydon side that result was a 2-2 draw giving them 2nd place in the league with a game to spare.

It has been an unprecedented season for the hockey club based at Whitgift Sports Club in South Croydon, they have had three of their four men's teams promoted, the 1st and 3rd elevens both promoted in the last couple of weeks as league winners.
