Season 17/18; Episode 14 - Mud, Sweat and Tears

The 4th Team rolled up in Merton bright and early to find the pitch they would be playing on resembling something that had been used for armoured vehicle manoeuvres! There was mud and muck across much of the pitch, which indicated our normal free-flowing hockey(?!) wouldn't be possible...

But we weren't going to let a little thing like that get in our way! With Broken Man back, held together with Sellotape and Deep Heat, there was a good strong spine to the side. And the Colonel was confident of getting something from the match - scratch that, he was just happy that he'd been given a trophy before the game for winning the league last year!

The match was a physical, scrappy affair, dictated by the slow pitch and slippery conditions underfoot. Neither side created much of note through the first half in particular, so it was anyone's game in the second half. It just needed a moment of quality...

Unfortunately, that turned out to be with Merton, as maybe 20 minutes in to the half the ball broke down our left. The cross came in to the top of our D where the opposition player took one touch and fired in an unstoppable shot. The Bowl had no chance, the strike was too good and not in keeping with the way the rest of the game had gone.

On such small margins we rise or fall, and for the second straight week we've gone down 1 - 0 when it easily could have gone the other way.
