We won 3 - 2

So with this week's premonition, care of Netty, a 3-1 win; we started the day with oodles of confidence. However, today's game saw yet more of our team on the cheer leading bench with a variety of injuries. Poppy made a strong supportive appearance in her cast, although appeared to forget her get well soon finger puppets for the half time show...no commitment!! Despite this we had a strong 12-woman side thanks to an appearance from Hannah McCormack. Following Nicky juggling her balls in our team talk we made our way to the pitch and upon seeing the opposition we once again feared that our ageing joints were to be put to the test against the troop of teenagers sauntering their way to the pitch.
The game started with a number of us out of position; Pav in goal and our usual mids covering some defensive gaps. It took a while for us to get our heads around this with half the defence being more than half way up the pitch at the same time. Unluckily for us, Oxted took advantage of this. Their star player, who we unanimously decided was actually Farah Fawcett and who had chosen to channel the 80s by appearing as Jill Munroe from Charlie's Angels, dribbled past three of our players to score the first.
We were 1-0 down but claimed it back and won our first short corner. With a textbook top of the D strike from Hannah we drew level. Oxted pressed hard. Keen not to let another goal in, our ever so committed and gutsy captain Nicky channeled her inner Kate Richardson-Walsh and valiantly broke down their play by using her face! Much love and respect to Robo.
Half time, a bit of jiggling round of positions and 6 bags of starburst and jelly babies consumed, we came out hyperactive and determined. 10 minutes in and a scuffle in the D led to a shovel of the ball over the line by Kirsty (we think?!). 2-1 up. Once again, Oxted responded quickly with a return scuffle in our D. The ladies on the pitch momentarily lost all awareness of the ball, which was sitting mere inches in front of the goal, turning invisible to the 5 players (3 COWS and 2 Oxted) surrounding it. This momentarily left our umpire Adam D-P perplexed and questioning his own confidence in identifying the orange blob on the floor as the hockey ball. A couple of seconds passed and, luckily, sanity returned and Pav accidentally hoofed the ball away.
Leggs then spent the next few minutes feeling guilty at their missed opportunity and on their next foray into the D she kindly decided they should have a fighting chance, pushing Pav to the floor and allowing Farah to claim her second...I mean she's just so thoughtful that one!
With 5 minutes to go Kirsty picked up a cleared ball and at an angle as tight as a nun's whatsit, she slipped it past the keeper. The last 5 minutes saw us defending hard to secure the win and see us leap up 2 positions in the table. The ladies 2s are now sitting pretty on 13 points...already 1 more point than the whole of last season.
We skipped back to the bar at PW's and with some delayed service from Mr Happy, we celebrated and debriefed.
Thanks to Adam D-P for umpiring and our wonderful cheer leading squad of Poppy, Netty and Helen. Focus now turns to kicking Addiscombe arse!
Win 3-2, POM Jo Douglas
