Sometimes a scoreline conjures up images of a torrid afternoon in pouring rain, being battered by gale force winds, whilst a well drilled opposition gives us a demonstration of how to keep possession and how to slot home a bagful of goals. Oh, wait. Was that last week's report? Or is it this week's? Sometimes the results blur into one.
Fair's fair, Old Georgians were very good; they were skilful and fast. Really fast. So fast that at times we were forced to unwittingly employ alternative methods of dispossessing them of the ball, not all of them strictly within the rules of hockey. And to be fair, it was really foul weather. Whereas last week's rain was tropically monsoon-ish, this week it just lashed it down in cold unceasing torrents of wetness. This made standing up quite difficult at times.
And so to the positives. We never give up. We all like each other very much and there are no recriminations after a game like this. Our short passes are very effective and allow us to gain easy territory. Livy scored a cracking goal from the edge of the D. We were holding Old Georgians to 1-2 at half time. Rachel never stops running. Nicky, despite nearly being an OAP after her recent birthday (Nicky, was it your birthday? Why didn't you tell us?!) ran over 8km, according to her magic watch. Our opposition never quite know what to expect from us, given our idiosyncratic style of tackling (Lena and Chloe). There were no errors in our short corner routine this week. The book and its keeper are always correct. At least one member of the team (me) believes that even when the umpire signals 2 minutes remaining there is still a chance we can score 5 goals in 120 seconds.
Thanks to Hoops for getting drenched to the skin whilst dispensing words of wisdom (whoever gets Hoops for their Secret Santa ... May I suggest a completely waterproof outfit for him?) And to LBell for her numeracy skills that allow her to calmly cope with the split votes each week. And to the rain for allowing us to make the scientific discovery that if it absolutely chucks it down with rain for 70 minutes non-stop, it is statistically proven that everyone's shoelaces will come undone.
The team was: Sharon, LBell, Lena, Emma F, Santy, Dicko, Chloe, Becky, Alex, Rachel, Nicky and Livy.
PoM votes were 0.5 for Dicko, 1 for Nicky, 2 each for Livy and Becky, 3.5 for Alex and 4 for the ever-running Rachel.
